A significant decrease in the electricity demand of 2,5% from 2014 to 2016 can be attributed to slow down of the economy, successful implementation of demand side management initiatives and a shift towards self generation by end users. The total decrease in the electricity demand from 2011 to 2016 are now standing at 5,5%. This leaves the local power utility, Eskom, with a spare capacity of 5000MW (approximately 12% of Eskom’s generation capacity).
