Paper: Assessment approach for the refurbishment of concrete overhead power lines

Concrete pylon refurbishment

Abstract

After conducting an external audit on the powerline concerned, it was evident that significant refurbishment activities on the concrete overhead power line structures were required to ensure the serviceability of the powerline as a whole. These pylons have long passed their initial life expectancy and little to no information on their structural integrity was known. Therefore the refurbishment activities needed to ensure that the structural integrity of the initially installed solution was met.

Apart from not being able to classify the deterioration level of the structural element as a whole, the difficulty with determining the most appropriate and cost effective solution for each specific individual pylon, created further difficulty.

A classification of the respective deterioration levels were developed as well as a respective repair methodology, which considers, both the practical implementation thereof and the cost associated with the selection of the most appropriate repair methodology.
